30-Minute DIY Pool Maintenance Guide
Having your own swimming pool at home is a treat for the whole family. But you got to admit it; weekly pool maintenance services cost a lot. Save on extra bucks and give the pool guy a run for his money by learning these simple DIY pool maintenance tricks. Below is a step-by-step guide plus the supplies and tools needed.
What You’ll Need:
- Water test strips
- pH increaser (sodium bicarbonate)
- pH decreaser (sodium bisulfate)
- Water shock
- Skimmer net
- Pool brush
- Pool vacuum
DIY Pool Maintenance Steps:
Step 1: Pool Skimming
With the use of a skimmer net, remove fallen leaves and other debris floating on the surface. Skimming of your pool’s surface should be done on a regular basis to avoid contamination of the water.
Step 2: Pool Brushing
Get the pool brush and clean the pool’s sidings, floor, and steps of any stain or grime. Pay attention to areas with a poor flow of water like stairs. Do this at least once a week.
Step 3: Pool Vacuuming
There are many types of pool vacuum, but for DIY pool maintenance, it is recommended to use either a manual pool vacuum or a robotic pool vacuum. Do this at least once a week.
Step 4: pH Level Balancing
Test your pool’s pH level using water test strips. The pH level should range from 7.2 to 7.6. If the pH level is lower or acidic, you can use a pH increaser to increase its alkalinity. If on the other hand, the water has a higher pH, you can lower the alkalinity by using a pH decreaser.
Step 5: Pool Disinfecting
Chlorine helps kill bacteria in the water. Add chlorine to the pool as instructed on the manufacturer’s label. If you think that the pool is dirtier than usual you can put water shock to get rid of any contamination.
Step 6: Pool Filter Cleaning
It is also important that you regularly check and clean your pool filter of any grime or dirt to avoid clogging.
